Astrocartography Calculator: How to Read Your Map and What to Do With It
An astrocartography calculator takes your birth data — date, time, and place — and draws a set of lines across a world map. Each line marks a location where one of your natal planets falls exactly on an angle: the Ascendant, Descendant, Midheaven, or Imum Coeli. Those four angles are the most sensitive points in any chart. When a planet sits on one of them, it operates at full volume.
The map itself is simple to generate. What takes longer is knowing what you're looking at once you have it.

What an Astrocartography Calculator Actually Does
Your birth chart is calculated for one specific place on Earth. The planets were in certain positions at the moment you were born, and those positions were measured from a particular spot. Move that chart to a different city, and the planets don't change — but the angles do. A planet that sat quietly in the fifth house in your birth city might land directly on your Midheaven in Tokyo, or on your Ascendant in Lisbon.
The calculator redraws the angles for every longitude and latitude on the planet simultaneously. The result is a set of curved lines — four per planet, one for each angle — running across the map. Ten planets times four angles gives you forty lines. Outer planets like Chiron or the lunar nodes can push that number higher depending on the system used.
To use any astrocartography calculator, you need three things:
- Your birth date (day, month, year)
- Your birth time (as exact as you can get — hospital records beat memory)
- Your birth city
Birth time matters more here than in most astrological work. The angles shift by roughly one degree every four minutes of clock time. An hour's difference in birth time can move a line hundreds of miles. The Four Angles and What They Mean
Before you can read a line, you need to know what each angle does. The four angles represent four fundamentally different modes of experience.
MC Lines (Midheaven)
The Midheaven corresponds to the Sun's position at noon — the highest point in the sky. It governs career, social status, public image, profession, ambition, and reputation. It's how you're seen in professional and social contexts, and where you rise — or struggle — in the eyes of the world around you.
A planet on your MC line acts itself out in the career arena and the social sphere. Wherever that line runs, the planet's energy becomes visible. It's not quiet or internal. People notice it. Institutions respond to it.
IC Lines (Imum Coeli)
The IC is directly opposite the MC — the midnight point, the lowest culmination. It governs home, family, roots, ancestry, heritage, private life, property, and the deepest layer of self-definition. Dan Furst calls it the material plane: where you eat, sleep, and belong.
A planet on your IC line expresses itself inwardly. It shows up in domestic life, in how a place feels at the end of the day, in what rises to the surface when you're alone. The IC is where a location gets under your skin rather than putting you on display.
AC Lines (Ascendant)
The Ascendant marks the eastern horizon — the rising point. It governs self-image, personal expression, physical presence, identity, and the direct effect you have on other people. It's the face you wear, the first impression you make, and the way your personality organizes itself in a given environment.
A planet on your AC line manifests in personality and self-definition. You feel it in how you carry yourself, in what strangers respond to, in how clearly you come through. The Ascendant is the most immediately personal of the four angles.
DC Lines (Descendant)
The Descendant is directly opposite the Ascendant — the western horizon, the setting point. It governs relationships, marriage, partnerships, cooperation, and how other people show up in your life. Its energy is projected outward onto partners and the public.
A planet on your DC line doesn't always feel like yours. It tends to arrive through other people — the kinds of relationships you attract in a place, the way strangers treat you, the quality of the mirrors others hold up. The DC is relational territory.
Reading Your Lines: Planet by Planet
Once you know the angles, the next step is pairing them with planets. Each combination produces a specific quality of experience at that location.
Here are the ten traditional planets and what they bring to each angle. This isn't a complete interpretation — the full picture includes your natal chart, transits, and the signs involved — but it gives you a working framework.
Sun Lines
The Sun brings vitality, identity, and visibility. On the MC, it's one of the strongest career placements on the map — recognition comes more readily, and ambition has room to run. On the AC, you feel more fully yourself, more alive in your own body. People see you clearly and respond to your presence. On the DC, the Sun illuminates your relationships, though there can be a tendency to orbit stronger personalities. Moon Lines

On the AC, feelings are close to the surface; you're more reactive, more empathic, more open. On the MC, emotional life becomes public in some way — work that involves nurturing, the public, or care. On the DC, the Moon amplifies emotional dynamics in relationships.
Mercury Lines
Mercury governs communication, thinking, and information. On the AC, the mind sharpens and the tongue loosens — conversations flow, ideas multiply, writing comes more easily. On the MC, communication becomes professional currency. On the DC, you meet clever, articulate people; contracts and negotiations tend to happen here. On the IC, thought turns inward — good for study, private writing, intellectual solitude.
Venus Lines
Venus governs beauty, pleasure, love, and resources. On the AC, charm and attractiveness come forward — you feel good in your own skin, and others notice. On the DC, Venus is in its natural territory: relationships, partnership, and romantic connection are activated. On the MC, Venus can bring aesthetic work, public appeal, or social grace to the career. On the IC, it softens and beautifies the home environment.
Mars Lines
Mars governs drive, energy, conflict, and desire. On the AC, you're more assertive, more physical, more direct — sometimes more combative. On the MC, ambition sharpens and competition increases; this is a line where careers are built through effort, not luck. On the DC, Mars tends to arrive through other people — you attract strong, forceful partners, and conflicts in relationship are more likely. On the IC, restlessness in the home environment is common.
Jupiter Lines
Jupiter governs expansion, opportunity, luck, and growth. On the MC, career advances. Opportunities come. Reputation grows. This is one of the most consistently favorable lines for professional ambition. On the AC, confidence expands and good fortune tends to follow — life feels larger. On the DC, generous, philosophical, or well-connected people show up. On the IC, Jupiter brings abundance to domestic life, though sometimes an inability to settle.
Saturn Lines
Saturn governs discipline, structure, responsibility, and limitation. On the MC, Saturn demands seriousness — work here is harder, standards are higher, but long-term recognition is possible for those who stay. On the AC, Saturn adds gravity and self-discipline to the personality, sometimes weight and restriction. On the DC, relationships come with obligations and seriousness. On the IC, the home environment can feel austere or heavy, though it also provides stability.
Uranus Lines
Uranus governs change, disruption, originality, and freedom. On the AC, identity shifts unexpectedly — you're more experimental, more electric, less predictable to yourself and others. On the MC, career takes unusual turns; conventional paths don't hold. On the DC, relationships are unconventional and sometimes unstable. On the IC, the domestic situation rarely stays fixed for long.
Neptune Lines
Neptune governs imagination, spirituality, dissolution, and illusion. On the AC, the boundaries of self become porous — heightened sensitivity, creativity, and sometimes confusion about who you are. On the MC, Neptune can glamorize the public image or obscure it; careers in the arts, healing, or spiritual work are more likely here. On the DC, idealization in relationships is a recurring theme. On the IC, Neptune deepens the inner life and the connection to ancestry and private spiritual practice.
Pluto Lines
Pluto governs depth, intensity, transformation, and power. None of Pluto's lines are subtle. On the MC, power dynamics in career are amplified — this is a line for serious professional reinvention, for better or worse. On the AC, the self undergoes pressure; Pluto on the Ascendant tends to produce intensity that others feel before you say a word. On the DC, relationships involve deep psychological territory. On the IC, the roots go very deep — ancestral themes, buried history, and private reckoning.
Crossings: Where Two Lines Meet

Several free astrocartography chart calculators exist online. Most generate a basic map and label the lines. The differences between free and paid tools usually come down to three things: visual clarity, interpretive depth, and accuracy of the underlying ephemeris.
For a free astrocartography calculator, the main things to check:
Does it allow you to enter an exact birth time? Tools that only accept date and location — or round to the nearest hour — will place lines incorrectly.
Does it show all four angles per planet? Some simplified tools only show one or two angles. A complete map needs AC, DC, MC, and IC for each planet.
Does it include outer planets? Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto have long orbital periods, so their lines don't move much from person to person — but they still matter, especially in combination with other lines.

How to Actually Use Your Map
Generating the map is straightforward. Using it takes more thought.
A few principles that hold up in practice:
Not every strong line is a good fit. A Jupiter MC line is generally favorable for career, but if you have Saturn conjunct Jupiter natally, the Jupiter MC line in a city also activates Saturn. The natal chart context matters.
Distance from a line still counts. The standard orb used in astrocartography is roughly 700 miles (about 1,100 kilometers) from a line, though influence is strongest within 400 miles. You don't need to live directly on a line to feel it. If a line runs through a country and you live in the same region, some of that energy is present.
Your lived experience is data. If you've spent time in a particular city and your relationships always seemed to improve there, check whether a Venus DC line runs nearby. If a place always felt like hard work with eventual reward, look for Saturn MC. The map often confirms what your life has already shown you.
IC and AC lines are felt more personally. The MC and DC lines play out through external circumstances — career events, the people you meet. The IC and AC lines tend to feel more interior. Transits change which lines are active. Your natal astrocartography map shows your baseline. But transiting planets create their own set of lines that overlay the natal map. What the Map Won't Tell You
An astrocartography calculator and explanation will take you only so far. The map shows conditions, not outcomes. A Mars MC line in a city means competition and effort in the career sphere — it doesn't tell you whether you'll win or lose. A Neptune AC line means heightened sensitivity and a more fluid sense of identity — it doesn't tell you whether that produces art or confusion.
The map also doesn't account for free will, timing, or the specific circumstances of your life. Two people with identical astrocartography maps will experience the same city differently based on their natal charts, their transits, and what they're doing when they arrive.
Use the map as a set of informed conditions, not a verdict. A place where conditions are favorable still requires action. A place where conditions are challenging isn't one to avoid automatically — sometimes the resistance is the point.
Getting Started
If you're new to all of this, the simplest entry point is to pull up your map, locate two or three places you've already lived or spent significant time, and check which lines run near them. Compare what the lines suggest to what you actually experienced there. That correlation — or lack of it — teaches you more about how to read your specific map than any general guide can.
